"How long do eyelash extensions last?" General Lifespan of Eyelash Extensions

While individual experiences may vary, eyelash extensions typically last between 3 to 6 weeks on average. During this time, extensions will naturally fall out along with the natural lash cycle. However, proper care and maintenance can extend their lifespan.

Differences in Retention Based on Extension Types

Firstly, there are three main categories of eyelash extensions differing by their application method. Each method affects how long the extensions will last, so let's introduce the types and the benefits regarding their longevity.

Classic Lash:

With this technique, one extension is attached to one natural eyelash. The attachment is only between the natural lashes and the extension, therefore depending on the condition of the natural lashes, the technique of the Lash Artist and the product compatibility, the extensions may easily come off.

A technique that applies lighter and thinner extensions is Fanned on to a single natural lash.

Despite misconceptions, Volume Lash is particularly recommended for people who do not have a large volume of lashes.

The retention can be significantly better with the wrapping technique, where multiple extensions are wrapped around a single natural lash, increasing the bonding area by more than three times compared to classic lashes, and ensuring a firm hold with less glue.

This technique allows for lighter, fluffier extensions.

Hybrid Lash

Hybrid lashes

Hybrid Lash is a combination of the classic and volume lash techniques and alternates between a single extension and a bundle of multiple extensions for each of your own lashes. The adhesion of Hybrid Lash is related to the technique of each application, so it is somewhere between classic and volume.

Typically, any style of extensions should last about 4 to 6 weeks. However, based on my experience as a lash artist, classic extensions usually retain 40-50% by the 4th week, whereas volume extensions often have about 70% retention.

Aftercare for Better Eyelash Extension Longevity (Retention)

It is important to choose the type of eyelash extensions mentioned above according to the condition of your individual eyelashes and the design you want.

But no matter which menu you choose, regular maintenance and correct aftercare are the keys to maintaining the retention of the extensions.

Even if a highly skilled artist has done their best to fit them, if home care is not undertaken at all, not only will the retention of the extensions be poor, but it will also be difficult to keep the eye area clean, which could lead to unexpected irritation, etc. Please read through to the end.

Avoid Moisture

For the first 8 hours (preferably 24 hours) after application, avoid all contact with water, including showers, saunas, pools, and sweating from intense exercise. Moisture can weaken the adhesive's bond, so it's crucial to adhere to this period.

Use of Eyelash Brush

Gently comb your lashes daily with a dedicated eyelash brush to align and prevent tangling. This helps maintain a neat lash flow and a beautiful, natural look.

Remember to brush your eyelashes especially when you wake up and after washing your face.

Avoid Pressure During Sleep

To avoid pressure on your eyelash extensions during sleep, it is recommended to sleep on your back. Pressing your face against the pillow can put odd pressure on the extensions and cause them to come off easily.

The Importance and Use of Lash Shampoo

Incorporating lash shampoo into your routine is vital for maintaining the extensions' retention and keeping the eye area clean.

This special shampoo is designed to gently remove buildup, oil, and makeup residue from the lashes and lash line.

Especially for those with volume lashes, dirt tends to accumulate around the roots, so if you have not tried this shampoo yet, please include it in your home care routine.

â–ŒHere's how to use lash shampoo at home:

  • Prepare: Lash shampoo is usually available at your salon, so purchase the shampoo and a dedicated brush.

  • Cleanse: Gently apply the lash shampoo on your eyelids and lightly cleanse with the brush. Focus on gently washing from the base to the tips of the lashes, especially along the lash line.

  • Rinse: Gently rinse your lashes with lukewarm water. Be careful not to rub harshly or apply strong water pressure.

  • Dry: You can gently pat the lashes with a clean towel but avoid rubbing them. Alternatively, you can use a lash-specific blower or fan with a gentle airflow to dry them.

While daily care may seem daunting, incorporating lash shampoo into your routine every 2 or 3 days can significantly extend the retention of your extensions and keep your eye area clean, reducing the risk of inflammation or infection.

Be Mindful of Heat

When wearing eyelash extensions, it's crucial to be cautious around high heat sources, such as cooking in the kitchen or sitting around a fire pit. The synthetic fibres (PBT) used in most extensions can melt or deform when exposed to high temperatures. Indeed, I've had clients who, after getting too close to a fire while camping, had to have their extensions removed because they melted. So, always maintain a safe distance from direct heat.

Nourish Your Natural Lashes

Lash serum review

The health of your natural lashes significantly affects the longevity of your eyelash extensions.

For those who feel their lashes are thin, I recommend using an eyelash serum.

These serums aim to make lashes thicker, longer, and stronger by providing nutrients that promote lash health and support growth.

Regular use of an eyelash serum can thicken and strengthen your natural lashes, thus widening the bonding surface for extensions. A larger bonding area means extensions can adhere more securely to the natural lashes, leading to a longer lifespan.

Therefore, using an eyelash serum is an effective method to improve the longevity of your extensions.

What if the eyelash extensions applied in our salon come off in a few days?

What if the eyelash extensions applied in our salon come off in a few days?

Please check which type of lash has come off:

  1. If the lash that has come off is attached to your own natural eyelash, it’s likely due to the natural shedding cycle of your lashes. There’s no need to worry; this is a normal occurrence.

  2. If it’s the lash extensions themselves that are falling out, and a significant number do so within the first five days, this is not normal! Please contact us!
